We love this charming wooden/rope swing for its simplicity and ease. It comes in 16 different colors (or unfinished if you prefer unpainted), has peel/flake resistant paint (and is stained with a natural/non-toxic stain), and is made by Amish craftsmen in the U.S. As with the other swings, rope is used instead of chains so that little ones don’t get pinched fingers. These swings look great wherever you place them around your yard and they are sure to become a treasured heirloom.

.This swing is for older toddlers starting around age 3. It lasts until age 10 which is a huge bonus! We love that this set (like the first) has a sweet animal theme, and also really handy reference guides like how to choose the right swing set for your backyard. The design is as thoughtful as it is cute, especially in that it has its own beam and sides, so all you have to do upon ordering and receiving the swing is go to the location you’d like and set it up! No worrying about branches or beam strength or other considerations- it’s one-stop set up and one-stop swinging! This swing can be moved indoors, as it comes with a rubber pad to protect your floors.

This we can picture beachside or in an amazing little garden set up! Macrame design has been ultra popular, so this will look gorgeous with the rest of your furnishings. It is also surprisingly durable and able to be outside or inside just as successfully- and it is surprisingly strong, holding up to 50 lbs! Make sure baby can hold his/her head up with this swing, and then they are ready to go! These swings are handmade in India by local artisans, are 100% organic cotton, and feature a solid wood bar. If your baby and your yard are the dreamiest, this is the swing for you!

There’s a few staples that benefit outdoor time at home, and the one we want to talk about are swings! That’s because they are one of the most universally adored play pieces and, similar to a car seat, can be used for a wide range of sizes. As you know, they don’t tend to be the same size for more than a couple of weeks (sometimes hours).

First, there’s a few things to keep in mind in looking for outdoor swings.

1. Choose your setup location.

When you go outside there’s lots of factors to consider. You may want to get a very hardy/weather resistant swing if it’s going to be exposed to all the elements year-round, or you may consider finding a lightweight/easily-assembled swing so you can take it down as needed. Many of the swings available (and on our list!) are suitable for both indoors and outdoors; and they look just as beautiful in both places! Consider also the “landing” (ground) they are over. If your child(ren) is/are older and more independent, a soft landing place may be ideal for them so they can jump on and off safely and comfortably. If you have a baby/babies, then a location close to a door and out of the sun might be what you desire more than any particular ground, since you will be picking them up to put them in and take them out of the swing. Also consider how long your little one(s) will be spending on the swing at any given time. If they’ll be out in the sun, make sure there’s lots of sunscreen available to them each time they go. But usually, you can suspend a swing on a great tree branch or in partial shade so they get the perfect balance of sun and shade. It may be beneficial to place a swing under a tree or covered area if it rains very frequently in your area, though most of the swings on our list have rust resistant hardware!

2. Look for removable parts.

If longevity is important to you in your swing shopping, check out options for removable parts (such as the “T-Bar” that some swings feature) as your baby/toddler grow. Most swings go up to 50lbs (and then from 50-200lbs), so that gives a good few-many years of use!

3. Consider material.

The swing will be outside, so consider that wooden and fabric materials will retain moisture longer than plastics or metals. However, if your swing will be accessible and easily removable, you may prefer wooden/fabric materials for their more eco-friendly nature and tendency toward cleanliness. There’s no right answer, just keep in mind what you’d prefer!

4. Consider the type.

There are bucket swings, disk swings, and gliders. Bucket swings provide high back support and usually have safety features like seat belts. These are almost always for toddlers and babies, so if your little one(s) is an older toddler, you may want to choose a different swing. Disk swings come with few (and sometimes no) safety features, so these are better for children who can support their own weight and have a sense of balance, as well as those who can be supervised on the swing whenever they use it. It may go without saying, but this would be a poor choice to put on a patio or other hard surface; save the disk swings for cushy grass or very soft dirt!

Gliders are right in the middle and usually have a hand hold (and frequently a foot rest) that offers some additional support. These all have different “expiration dates” based on child height/weight, but most will grow past toddler-hood, just make sure to check!

Noticeably absent from the types we’ll be looking at: belt swings! These are the “big boy” and “big girl” swings you see and teach your child to use at the park. Due to safety reasons, they’re just not recommended. However, these last well into adulthood so if that’s of interest to you and you’re invested in learning/supervising the safety, then do some independent research and have at it!

Enjoy your time outside in the sunshine with your children, and watch them grow with any of these amazing swings. The time flies, and they really love flying with it!
